Portrait of Squidward in the Early Northern Renaissance-esque artstyle
Portrait no.1

In this piece, I had attempted to capture Squidward in his most naturalistic state using a heavy amount of detail, which is present in a lot of Early Northern Renaissance work. Zooming into the artwork, you can see a ton of these minute details like the outside from the window, shines in both Squidward’s & Spongebob’s eyes, the wood texture of the kitchen floor, shadows cast from the characters, the small spots on Squidward’s nose & head, & reflections of light hitting each & every bolt in the wall. This type of detailing I had taken direct inspiration from Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, where you can observe such similar details in the background like the mirror reflecting the main figures from behind as well as how shimmers of light are absorbed by tiny beads. These details also helped to make the artwork look more naturalistic, or at least as naturalistic as I wanted it to be. Another Early Northern Renaissance influence I used was the classic 3 quarter turn that was pretty much present in every portrait of this movement. Even the referenced Arnolfini portrait had both figures' heads turned away from the viewer. Lastly, although there are two characters in the picture, the focus is very heavily on Squidward, who is placed in the foreground, so you can capture the dull state of his existence.
