Portrait no.3

Portrait of Squidward in the Northern Renaissance print style
Portrait no.3

This piece is meant to depict Squidward with melancholia, known better today as depression. To further drive in the idea, the composition of the piece is taken directly from Melencolia by Albrecht Dürer, which represents the concept I try to portray here. That concept being a portrait based on a more psychological representation instead of it being focused more on capturing the exact person itself. Of course it doesn’t fully apply because Squidward is still there & although he is the main focus of the piece, he is also one of 4 symbols meant to represent the 4 humors, which was a medical theory believed during the times of the Northern Renaissance. Referencing Adam & Eve, which is also by Dürer, 4 of the characters depicted all represent one of the 4 humors, with Squidward symbolizing black bile, Spongebob symbolizing blood, Plankton symbolizing yellow bile, & Patrick symbolizing phlegm, which all relates back to their main traits, depressed, enthusiastic, angry, & calm. As for the black & white style I had used for the portrait, I based it off of how printed artworks looked at the time as the printing press was just invented following the Northern Renaissance.
